The concept for these restrooms, was inspired by the adventures that American novelist Ernest Hemingway experienced on his beloved fishing boat, affectionately named “Pilar”, after his then second wife, Pauline. Pilar served as a creative muse for some of Hemingway’s best selling novels from the 1930’s, to the early 1960’s. Hemingway caught many record-breaking sized fish on the boat. With this in mind, we selected the wall coverings, showcasing various types of fish that are found in the sea. The scalloped look of the wall tile serves to represent fish scales, and the round penny tile flooring has a round shape to represent bubbles found in water, or in this case, within the sea. The faucet style is remnant of an water well pump, to add a charming old-world feel. The antique-spotted patina on the mirror above the sink, was selected to also convey an “old meets new” feel in the space.
